This month leads me to the most exciting news that Hannah-Alexander has allowed me to create a second set of patterns based on her Mucha fanart: Tinkerbell, Esmerelda, and Mulan. It is very likely that I will be able to do more patterns based on more princesses in the future, as long as all these go well (which I'm very confident that they will). These patterns will be of similar size and difficulty to the first set so that everything matches (wouldn't it just be glorious to have all of them stitched and hanging together on a wall of their own?!). You can buy the current set, and the future set, via my Etsy store. Currently I'm just awaiting the non-watermarked artwork from Hannah to start work. Until then, the full plate I presented to you last month has shrunk just a bit.
But she has told me she's going to display the finished, framed piece in her shop along with my business cards. And since her shop is amazing and my friends overseas have really been there, I am going to do it as an investment. Princess Daisy had her beads purchased, with help from PeachesInTheMorning. Peaches expressed to me that she "respects me even more" now that she can see how difficult picking out all the correct beads in matching colors and sizes is! I managed to get matching 11s and 15s in all the color choices except #111 15s. My supplier (the very sweet similarly-named Ashley) is on the hunt for them but I may be able to get away without them.
I'm getting worse about updating the blog and I do apologize for it. There's a lot of events going on right now and my days just get surprisingly busy despite not much finished work to show for it! My current work pile is as follows, and then below there will be some pictures:
- Butterfly Xstitch with beads for Stitchingpirates's contest
- Apprenticeship work for seamstress training (once a week right now)
- Birds Xstitch (for future sale)
- Star Trek Bead Dress
- Princess Daisy Bead Dress
- Glasmond's Between Day and Night Xstitch (to be mailed to her finished)
- Xstitch Pattern Re-Make for Mattsma
- Xstitch Pattern for Miskumi
- Xstitch [surprise gift] MLP
- Real Person sized robe-dress
- Two Wedding Samplers Xstitch
- One Baby Sampler Xstitch
- Beaded Cake Kit from Katie Dean
- Barbie, Monster High, and Ever After High Bead Dress Prototypes
- Kitchen Xstitch (for future sale)
- HAED Storykeep Xstitch (my first HAED)
As you can see, my plate is full! Even though only two of these events have technical due dates I find myself shuffling between everything rather frequently and the end result is, well, less submissions for large projects. And on top of all of that I still have to thank 1,513 people from April for the big front-page boom that was Hannah Alexander's Mucha Princesses.
Even though it wasn't Kreinik's intention it really called me back to when I was first learning to stitch and didn't understand color codes, so if a pattern called for shades of green I just grabbed whatever I thought would work. I used that same freestyle method here (except with some tact) to just make the cats look how I wanted them to look.

You may have noticed up above that I'm now officially a seamstress's apprentice! Yes! I'm working with a super nice lady named JoAnn. She's 75 and been sewing since she was 6, has written books, and even has college degrees in tailoring. She knows how to tailor a man's suit from top to bottom and she's teaching me!! Project #1 was essentially "how to make a straight line" and I can't really blame her for making that the first lesson. She gave me a bunch of denim and instructed me on how to cut it all up into squares, turn it, and make my first quilted pieces. I had to make two 24x24 inch squares from lots of little squares and yeek! Yeah, I can make a pretty decent line now. The good piece was turned into a cover for my sewing machine (and let me tell you... making that hole for the handle was the hardest thing yet) and the scrap piece is now a little cat blanket for Dax.
The next project is a dress for me, in sweet lavenders. It's much more than expected. I can make a dress in miniature with nothing but beads and thread yet figuring out how to cut fabric properly is still difficult. I learned how to take measurements and astonishingly despite my short, round figure, I am indeed an hourglass. This ended up aiding me as my figure is non-standard and so lesson "reading patterns" became lesson "modifying patterns". Also, as a side observation, I'm aware pattern paper is so thin to save on cost etc but really... having a bit more than tissue paper would be nice in Arizona with all the fans going.

This month was mostly behind-the-scenes things like pattern work on Glasmond's piece, playing catch-up with messages on deviantART (I still have 1,800 people to thank!), and further practice on actual sewing - like for dresses. Because it's mostly stuff that makes no sense to photograph it makes things look a little bare, but trust me! Things are definitely going on.
All the same, her patterns are so nicely put together that swapping the colors up was an easy task and I could make it my own piece. That said, they're also super easy to read with bold, clear instructions.
This month has cascaded from a couple set aside plans to a lot getting done. My closet pile is now two pieces smaller, my grandpa got remarried, the second bead dress of the year was finished, the Barbie prototype is getting her skirt, my pattern work on Glasmond's piece is starting, oh... and that's right, I'm now PUBLISHED in a magazine!! Four pages all to myself! I can't contain my happiness, and though I'm sure it's been over a hundred times already, I'm going to thank Katie Dean of Bead Flowers again... it's just way too incredible. You can find me in the June/July 2015 issue number 63.
I'll start by covering my May submission for Tons of Tiny and D.E.S.I.G.N..

It counts for Tons of Tiny at just 82 x 100 stitches. It's also for sale on Etsy with 50% being donated to Tigers in America.

This week has lasted much longer than any other this year. It has been busy, stressful, full of excitement, sad, and overjoyed. This post will cover from Easter (the 5th) to now which covers more ground than I could've thought possible so let's get started with the largest event and move down the list: The Disney Mucha Girls designed by Hannah-Alexander that I was converting into cross-stitch patterns are finished!

You can view a larger image and learn more [here].
You can PreOrder them through [here] or [here] but please do not comment on this blog post to make your order because Blogger hates me and won't let me reply to comments. You could also message me via [etsy] directly. They're $20 each or $55 for a set of all three.

At this time Hannah hasn't given me permission to create patterns from her other princesses in the set so all we can do is hope that that changes in the future. So, until the if and when of that happens, these three (Rapunzel, Belle, and Meridia) are the only ones around for you to stitch and love.

The aftermath of posting these patterns has been immense. The first couple hours I sat there, staring at my inbox sadly, wondering and worrying that I had just put all this time and effort into them (with very mentioned help from my sister stitchers to the right) just for nobody to even want them. I replied to people as they came in at the usual flow (much thanks to my usual watchers who always have something nice to say!) and settled in for another project that wasn't going to take off like I hoped. Sure, it was a ton of fun to do! And certainly a challenge to get everything perfect and accurate to the original artwork as close as I and my friends could do. But the realist in me just couldn't see the light.
So I left my post at the laptop and went to watch some TV with my mom and brother while I worked on yet another butterfly. The next day I got a message back from someone I had thanked on Thursday telling me I was on the front page of deviantART for Friday!! That is just about one of the coolest things ever.

I was finding myself physically unable to keep up with the messages coming in; I would thank twenty people and refresh the page to find thirty more had taken their place. I stopped trying to thank everyone adding the patterns to their favorites and have allowed the messages to pile up while I focus on responding to comments, notes, and new watchers (followers on most other websites). In the last three days I have gained 229 watchers which is just astonishing, and the numbers keep going up. I mean, I'm used to having maybe a dozen people add me per month (Princess Peach skewed a lot of my regular numbers) so having a dozen new people to thank every time I open my inbox...! It's beyond my expectations! As I write this I have over 30,000 views on the patterns and over 3,000 favorites - it is not only the fastest growing thing I've ever posted, it's the most viewed and the most favorited! The only thing topping it for my statistics is my very first Daily Deviation which has more comments, and at the rate of things probably not for too much longer.

A Dimensions pattern rejected by my cousins.

The next most exciting event is that both my cousins Lynee and Amelia were proposed to on the 4th, and Lynee found out she was pregnant!! I know you must be saying, "two weddings and a baby are way more exciting than finishing patterns!" but this is an art blog and hence it takes a lower tier. What it does mean for art is that if either of them find a pattern they can't live without I will be making wedding samplers and baby samplers (cross-stitch) which will be large projects in all likelyhood.

There is also the possibility of me taking on a project for people-sized clothing for Amelia. Not all beads! In fact, probably no beads. It'll be sheer fabric and lace if it comes about at all and I'm excited to see if I'm actually going to do it or if she's going to purchase one from someone/where else.

Another exciting thing going on this past week is my friend Cat's Wire did a blog post detailing her own troubles with making Barbie-sized clothing out of beads. You can read about it over on her blog, [here].

You know what that's leading into, right? Yes! I'm going to start prototypes for my own Barbie-sized bead clothing hopefully this month, likely the beginning of May due to those Mucha Girls having such a loud response (no complaints). I'd like to have at least one prototype dress finished by the summer even if it's a non-removable one. I'm going to be working with miniature zippers just 3mm in width and possibly buttons for removable dresses but this isn't top priority. With the money I'm going to make from the Mucha Patterns I'll be able to buy at least one nude silkstone doll and that'll help with a lot of the planning!

Don't fret about the other projects getting nudged aside. I rotate my workload rather regularly and because of my super-useful way or keeping lists for everything projects aren't forgotten about. Monochrome Eumelia is nearly to the first gradient in her skirt and the Star Trek dress has received more pattern sketches (she looks more like the Next Generation than the Original Series at this stage).
Next week is Tons of Tiny and D.E.S.I.G.N. so keep a look out!

This month has been a bit of a flurry for me with hardly a moment of real rest. I applied for a real job-job (my very first) at the beginning of the month, was called back the second week, worked the third week, and by the following Wednesday they told me that they were looking for someone more experienced. "That's funny," I thought with a very sour face, "three weeks ago they didn't seem to mind that they'd have to train me!" That particular event ate up a lot of my time this month as did a rather harsh bout of illness. I'm nearly healthy now with just a pointless cough.

Between all that I did manage to get some artwork done which is good, so let's get to it.

Before I continue I should note that sweet Carla has changed her blog address and so Tons of Tiny has a new link. [You can find it right here.] The piece I'm featuring today was actually sent to me for winning the Tons of Tiny raffle for February! I was really quite pleased with the prizes and receiving such a lovely package in the mail.

Since the last update I've been working on the Mucha patterns, monochrome Eumelia, sorting through my DMC thread (just missing a handful of colors now), the piece I'm about to display for you now, and various other projects about the house. March should prove to be the end for each of these projects and the beginning of another set. Mom has also bought up a couple bunches of pendants for me to use as focal pieces in jewelry creation.

This is the piece that I mentioned many moons ago, the one that came with all but the pattern, and have been shifting around my room since I started it. I could've had it done in a much speedier time frame if I'd set my mind to it, but I didn't, and so now here we are!

I'm counting this piece for Tons of Tiny since it has a stitch area of 92 x 128.

February has seemed like a slow month for me when I look at the Facebook posts but it's just because there's not a lot of progress to show that'll look very interesting. I felt the same way when I was first posting my beaded dress progress photos - I thought, "nobody is going to understand what's going on here, it's only interesting to me!" but look! You guys love seeing the progress and so I've continued posting them, now even I feel proud of my WIP shots.

Since working on patterns so in-depth is a new thing for me I'm feeling that again. I'm saying, "nobody is going to want to see all these funny symbols and lines of a WIP pattern" especially when it doesn't reflect what the final stitching is going to look like! And along the same thoughts I can't share it too entirely because these are patterns after all and are going to be sold.

The patterns I'm referring to of course are based on the lovely Hannah-Alexander's artwork and the three princesses I've chosen to do. If these are successful (which I have high hopes they will be) then I intend to contact her further to be able to do more of the princesses.

My current progress is on princesses Belle and Rapunzel. Belle is currently in the finished stage for me, which sounds a little funny to say but it is truly a stage before she is finalized. Rapunzel just got her outlines done yesterday and I haven't opened Meridia yet.

The beginning process for both of them has been similar in terms of
deciding what size to do for fabric and getting over my reluctance to
put in half stitches where needed (as HAED seems to be very popular for
only using full stitches).

Left is Belle. She was about sixteen hours in the making (a great deal of help from my stitching sisters especially Magical was given here on color selection for the gradient).

Right is Rapunzel's progress. She just has her outlines on and the colors you can see are premade from the program (not refined). You can see her really creepy eyes at this stage.

On 36 count fabric these ladies will be twelve inches tall, and likewise if done over two (or on 18 count fabric) they will be twenty-four inches tall. Either of them solo would be masterpieces for the wall and as a set they would without a doubt be a showpiece.

The program started Belle off with 124 colors in various shades of nonsensical macaroni orange and silvers. These were all manually sifted through by hand with the help of my friends to find the perfect gradient to match Hannah's artwork. She now has just 37 colors including the beads. Yes, beads! Hannah's description specifically mentioned mirrored and earthy-tone beadwork for her gown and I was happy to sort through Mill Hill's catalog to find perfect matches.

As for the pattern making process itself, I'm using the program as a guideline-maker and then doing it all by hand. Above I mentioned just reducing the color count - Rapunzel can be seen without the refinement here. It looks great zoomed out like this and you may be wondering why I feel the need to alter it at all. Truthfully the program picks colors that match most distinctly to the pixels but doesn't correlate to the real world threads 100% of the time. Belle's dress, in example, the program wanted to give it very neon-shaded oranges and green in her hair. This is because of the pixelization that occurs when stretching them image out to two feet! So a lot of manual color sorting has to be done to make sure it doesn't look ridiculous when it comes off the computer screen and into real life.

Another reason for all the manual work is that the backstitching should look like backstitching. Left unattended you can see the bottom of Rapunzel's skirt is thicker along the edge in comparison to Belle's. This is because I haven't removed all the excess brown colors leftover from the program forcing all the outlines into full stitches.

With the spirit of the Mucha stylization the outer lines are designated as thick (three strands of thread) and the inner lines are designated thin (just one strand of color). This makes an interesting challenge with the program in trying to get it to acknowledge the same color for the same stitch (backstitch) but in two different pattern designations.

Abby was not interested in helping.

Doing all this pattern work has caused me to realize that my thread collection is quite incomplete. As I said I've had my friends' help in determining what an accurate gradient would be for Belle's dress and hair. Well even this with photos and helping and referencing left and right on the internet, I decided I really needed the full collection to be able to reference things in person. I gathered up all my known locations for thread hoarding and began my catalog.

As it would turn out I have far more colors than I even realized that I owned and only needed to buy a mere drop in the bucket to complete the DMC thread collection. Even so, six of the colors were out of stock and I'm left feeling so close yet so far. With the collection all but complete however I will be able to confirm all my color selections are accurate and feel confident putting the pattern out for others to do.

Though it will not be right away and I still want to do GraniteFire's Progresstinate before I get too deep into it, I have the full intention of stitching these princesses myself and putting up "preview" stitchwork for the patterns. This will obviously not be before I put the patterns up for sale so that everyone isn't waiting on my stitching speed to be able to do it for themselves.

I'll be quite busy in the upcoming weeks so,
until next time,

Hello Nintendo fans,

It's true! Finally, after months of planning and work, my Princess Peach pattern (based on her Super Smash Brothers design) has come to a successful end. The lovely GraniteFire designed me a watermark that I've used for the first time on Peach's photos.

You can read the full description on deviantART.
My next project with this will most likely be Princess Daisy since she will give me a very accurate price range. Peach's 32.5 hour mark is probably not too far off from accuracy but because she was in the design stages undoubtedly when I get to Daisy I will be faster!

Of course, Peach has many other color schemes to pick from with Super Smash Bros.'s palette swaps, and I'm sure everyone will want to pick from their favorites at some point!

Here's a special extra photo of Peach's back, which is quite inaccurate from her Super Smash dress's design, but does match the majority of her other designs.

This week was spent entirely on creating Princess Peach's beaded sleeves and finishing up that butterfly cross-stitch I'd been working on. All the sleeve progress can currently be seen on Facebook. As for the butterfly, it's being featured here for the two stitching events my friends signed me up for: D.E.S.I.G.N. and Tons of Tiny.

First: this qualifies for Tons of Tiny which is a project that says anything in a 100x100 stitching area counts towards the final pile of loot. Since this pattern is only a few over (I think it's like 103) I'm considering it part of the event.

The more complicated event is D.E.S.I.G.N. which is about featuring the designer.

The original finishing for the pattern is quite ambitious and I'm sure that would appeal to many looking for inventive ways to do so.

Plenty has happened between now and my previous post, and the delay was a wonderful long-term visit from friends and family alike. Friday (the 9th) was when our last guest left and so I've been able to find the time to get back on the computer to post for you all.

First, the new year greeted me with two sales! Yes! Two in one week! Two separate customers who both wanted custom cross-stitch patterns. The first was a simple conversion with my program, unlimited colors (ended at 206) and took around five hours to get all the symbols properly readable. The second took about six hours to do and was hand-drawn (digitally) over the original artwork to make the pattern, as she only wanted a small amount (ended at 19). So two totally different projects ending in two totally different results! [You can buy your own pattern here.]
It snowed on New Year's Eve, the twelfth time I'd ever seen snow in person, and so naturally I ran around taking photos. It made the perfect background for my two holiday-related dresses.
Mysterious Mysteries also included those spools I mentioned some posts ago. Yes! I was hiding them in plain sight! The spool patterns are also for sale right now, in a nice bundle of seven patterns. They took about an hour each to do so it would make a great beginner project. You can find those right here.
It didn't really bring anyone in like I would have hoped, so those are back to the regular sale slot on Etsy. In good news, though, a matching pair was sent and happily opened to the Halloween Mermaid dress that was purchased last summer.
They're almost done, of course, it's just at this many hours I seem to want to go unpackage a different pattern and start my cycle all over again.
The flowers and butterfly has taken leaps and bounds since the last time I posted, so here's a great update picture for you. All that I have left are the leaves, the background, and some backstitching. Then, since I'm not going to be doing the fancy framing the kit suggests, it'll be for sale. (Surprise! Didn't see that coming, did you?)

My peacock is at the stage where he just needs the background and backstitching. He's turned out far prettier than I expected him to! He'll also be for sale at the end.

Now here's something that has been surprisingly difficult to find sources and information on: Nintendo allowing fanart to run wild. I've managed to track down [this page] and its source is a forum that I've never heard of, and so on. The other information (that I've been aware of from the start) is that this specifically applies to Japan, and I'm on edge waiting to see if it will apply to the USA. This is important to me because of the work I've been doing on Princess Peach. Yes, Peach! She's at 27 hours now and I'm just starting the lace up her gown. My original plan was to just have her as a personal piece, something I could use to become a Juried Member of the local art club, and generally show off my skills so that people might ask me to do custom commissions for them. I am hoping that I'll be able to sell other dresses made from this pattern. I feel that selling them should be okay, say if someone wants her in the black and gold coloring scheme, since I am not anywhere near "mass production" (each piece would still be hand made, and so on). For those wondering, yes, I do have plans to create a Princess Daisy version in the future, it's just not on the table at this time.

I've contacted the glorious Hannah Alexander of deviantART for permission to create some cross-stitch patterns based on her beautiful artwork. She has said yes! And now I'm just waiting for the handful I've requested without watermarks to be sent to me.

Hoo! That was a lot to cover! I hope all your holidays were splendid.
Until next week,
It pleases me greatly and inspires me to keep working.

First things first: I had a sale this month! It was another faux stained glass piece I did years ago and it'll be shipped out tomorrow. Hooray!

I've finished two cross-stitch pieces this month, started a third, and will be shortly beginning a fourth. The two finished pieces are already on deviantART: Mrs. Claus and my Ornament Angel.

The third piece started is just one I picked up to finish and sell later. It's a Dimensions kit that I won't be "finishing" like the kit wants me to, which is lots of odd tacking, gluing, and ribbon stuff. I did that last time with my butterfly and am not very pleased with the end result. So this time will be different! Quite unsurprisingly, this one is also a butterfly, but includes two flowers with it instead of grass.

Fourth is an ornament for Magical. She created two ornaments for the stitchingpirates secret santa exchange, but only one made it for the deadline. I said, "Don't feel left out, I'll trade the second one with you!" and so I'm going to be doing something pretty with that. I haven't started just yet but I'm, like, 99% sure of which pattern I'm going to use for it. And it's going to be awesome.

Mysterious mysteries is officially finished and is being mailed out as I type. Four of seven packages have been mailed and the other three are in waiting for tomorrow. What happened is that I accidentally paid way too much for some international shipping by putting them in white priority boxes, as opposed to recycled brown boxes. I just picked them because the mysterious mysteries fit in them - and I paid a hefty price for that! Next time I won't be so thrown off.

Reference of the back of her dress. Finally.

Princess Peach is now five hours into her skirt pattern drawing... and I'm only to her knees. I've taken multiple measurements from the photos to try and make them fit the five-inch scaling of my mannequins/dress forms. Here's a side story though, and it'll make sense in just a moment.

When starting my gingerbread dress (which has turned into more of a chocolatey gingerbread dress), the first form I grabbed wasn't drilled properly. That is, the stick entered at an angle instead of straight up-and-down, making the entire thing tilt to the left. I jammed some glue dots onto one end of the stick to straighten it out and the result is that the stand is straight but also taller.

So I've been measuring and measuring and measuring again with Peach. Her dress is just a bit longer than the five inches, there's not much I can do about it. I keep looking at it like, "if I could only add five more rows here or there, everything would work out." Well, my brother Arthur noticed my gingerbread discard being taller than everything else, and pointed out I could just do the same with Peach. Tuh-dah! Problem solved, thanks, Arthur. So Peach should be able to move right along now. The next problem will be figuring out how to get all that gold detailing to look proper. And then the beast of sleeves.

You'll notice in the reference photo I took above, that the back of her bodice is white and lacey. Well... I didn't know that until I took the picture, and even then I didn't know until I examined it on the computer and noticed, "hey! It's not pink!" The internet seriously lacks references from behind, it's so frustrating. Next time, if indeed I ever do a Princess Daisy version, it'll be fully accurate.

Monochrome Eumelia is still on the sidelines, and as I stated when I announced her, it's been over a year now since I first posted her! I knew when I announced her that there would be a time gap, but I didn't quite expect this much of a gap. This is because I'm really focusing on the other projects, especially Princess Peach, to get photos done for my magazine interview.

Until next week, happy holidays. May your cookies be tasty.

This week was spent mostly working on the final touches for mysterious mysteries, which means I can't post about them. This is also a post from my iPad so the formatting will be slightly weird until I can fix that. [Fixed 12/13/14]
I fell in love with her though and couldn't live with myself if I sent her away... even if it did make someone else happy to receive.

I put in another six hours volunteering at the local art club yesterday, for an event where you meet the artist while you shop. Next year I hope I'll be part of it instead of just taking attendance!

I haven't been able to do quite as much beading these past two weeks as I'd like, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy! Last week I missed my blog post - I looked up at it was around 2 AM and said, "Well, guess I'll double up next time." So beware a large helping below...

First things off, Peach's skirt is sort of in stand-by while I figure it out. The pattern I used in the past for Eumelia makes a great base, but I should've expected it to be more difficult. Eumelia, of course, is a long chain of colors all the way around and only has variations on when those colors have to change. Peach will require an entire drawing of each and every bead so that I have all the transitions between lace and decals correct! I'm thinking it will take at least six graph-paper pages to get it all layed out properly before I can start, quite the task.

The spools I've been working on are also on a bit of a standstill. I have finished five of them and expect to do at least three more before I'm satisfied to release patterns via Etsy. I'm just in a kind of creativity slump for them since they're quite small and most of my patterns seem to be coming out to stripes (boring).

The large project I started and finished these past two weeks is Mrs. Claus, designed by Brooke's Books Publishing and modified by me. She'll have final photos soon and then I'll be submitting her to the StitchingPirates myths, legends, and fairy tales contest! I've already had a request via Facebook to create a 3D version of her out of beads and a side nudging from GraniteFire to do so as well. Alicia may see a Christmas recoloring in her future!

Another side project that's popped up is one I'm going to leave as a surprise until I figure out what to do with it. Mom bought me a new doll to experiment beading onto and, well, basically I'm having myself a little Christmas early and am quite excited to see how she'll fit in with my other plans for Barbie or Tonner sized dolls.

A side event has occurred which has me on edge. My laptop seems to be having hard drive issues. I've done some extensive research into the problem and, essentially, once it starts failing it's only a matter of when. As I write this I'm making a backup of the entire thing seeing as my laptop has become so important to my day to day, as well as my business! All my photos of all my past artwork and everything, not to mention all the other fun stuff like game data I need to rescue before the ship sinks! This all said, I may be having my StitchingPirates crew take over for me if things explode so that the group still has submissions running smoothly. I can run Etsy mostly from my iPad, so I won't feel the need to close shop, but the group is something I can't handle until dA releases its app.

Hope all is well with the rest of you,

This week was a great sign to me that even with the lull in things that I'm able to pick the ball back up and go running as if nothing ever got in the way. I finished a dress and started a second, finished three steps in mysterious mysteries, and created the first in a series of custom spool bead patterns.
First off is my ocean-themed dress. She doesn't have her final photos yet, but as soon as she does she'll be listed for sale in my Etsy Store. This beauty used seven shades of blue, green, and purple, four shades of cream and tan, real copper accents, and white. She took all of twenty and a half hours to create. She's meant to mimic the ocean cresting on the beach sands, rolling colors and all. She's based on a color palette and photo from Design Seeds.

The second dress started this week is none other than Princess Peach Toadstool! She's had four hours of pattern drawing and five-and-a-half hours of bead time. I'm currently working on drawing out the rest of her skirt though I suspect that will take a long while to get all the details in accurately.

I tried peyote in both directions, as I've seen done before, but then I thought, "hey! I should just make my own patterns!" And, hence, the progress you see now. This is just a prototype but the plan is to make lots of geometrical patterns and sell them on Etsy. So far, so good.

Next week should bring about the finishing of at least drawing Peach's skirt pattern, though I'm uncertain if I'll be able to start beading it before next Sunday. I'll be working more on these spools and all around staying busy.

Until then,

It's no secret I've been in a slump for the past month or so. Before I headed off to California for my magazine photoshoot with my cousin (to send photos off to the editor in England!) I was feeling a bit unmotivated to continue, but as my friends and family assured me I had been working nonstop for so long that it was natural to burn out and have a break. I've spent the time flailing about, staring at my art supplies and feeling almost entirely unwilling to even pick up a needle. Then I did a bit of re-reading in my notes...

October 2nd was my brother's birthday, but it was also the day that I trucked my inventory down into town to try and sell a piece or two to a lady in town I had spoken to the month before. She told me she did most of her buying in October and had shown a great deal of interest over the photos of the pieces. I even told her the price range (~$200+) and how I do my pricing, agreed that she would be the only person in town who could display them, and that she could raise the price as high as she wanted (since she would be buying them outright as opposed to paying me when they sold).

The dress I made to fit into her shop.

When I arrived she told me she would probably only be able to sell them for $150, max, which meant she would have to buy them at much lower to make the profit. This, in of itself, I think is entirely reasonable when I stand back. It makes sense to me as the foot traffic in town certainly wasn't high and her shop doesn't sell in the price range I'm looking for. Even so, I cannot help but take it personally after having already discussed my pricing with her (and even explaining how I have no markup on my pricing - it's only materials and time) and getting my hopes up to be so outwardly put down.

The crown jewel to this encounter is that she asked me to come back with jewelry instead. I don't think I need to elaborate more on how I feel about this.

This is, in essence, my first rejection letter. It is different to have a store open and have lots of people look it over and not want to make a purchase, or the numerous people who would rather just buy a pattern from me instead of a finished piece (despite me not selling patterns currently). This is a face-to-face, personal, month-in-waiting, meeting. It wasn't a guarantee she would've bought anything, but her reasoning was so contradicting for me and the insult to injury comment about the jewelry, well... you can see the result of my poor ego, a whole month of not working! A whole month of feeling extremely unsure of myself and not even wanting to wake up out of bed as the days passed.

As with all things, once I can pin down the cause of my emotions it becomes much easier for me to tackle the problem head-on and adjust my behavior. The past month I've been a complete lump and not understood why I was lacking any motivation and now I've been able to find the root. With this new self evaluation I can readily tackle the projects that've been sitting patiently for me with an actual plan of action instead of just a list of things to get done.

The mysterious mysteries set of projects (a total of seven mysteries) is a month behind schedule and as such I've had to rewrite the entire plan. The new plan of action is much more feasible and just as mysterious as before. Previously, I was worried that I would be able to find enough time even with the month-extra buffer, now I know I'll have enough!

Princess Peach has another set of size 15 color-lined rainbow-coated beads coming in that are actually matched to code. Who knew that the original bag of size 11's that I had were Miyuki 0355 and not the random bead store's "35B" random baggie marking? And who knew that finding size 15s to match is completely ridiculous?! I should've predicted it, really, afterall it's impossible to find pink seed beads that aren't named after a million bubblegum-ballerina-salmon-carnation adjectives.

I will now reveal the secret bead dress I've been plotting - it's based on the Star Trek dress uniforms, specifically a mash between Next Generation and the Original Series. I've been keeping it a secret because I'm really unsure about how to make a miniature badge that will work, but I think I can use some Crystaletts "blank" backings to use for the base and a print-out Judikins-glazed top for the badge. Shout-out to my Puzzle Pirates friend, Tilla, for helping my track down many Trek related miniatures and finally suggesting the Judikins glaze as the custom solution!

I'll be moving my plans for a beach dress out to my second work station so that I will always have more than one project going again. Monochrome Eumelia, likewise, belongs at my first work station since the majority of her pattern is digital. Princess Peach will be at the first station as well.

With that my creativity seems to have taken hold again, much to my happiness! My most sincere wishes to the rest of my friends who have also been in a bit of an art slump lately - if you're anything like me, if you keep digging for a reason eventually you will find it.
Hello hello,

My motivation is still evading me despite all the ideas I have swirling around. I actually am sitting and thinking about how to tackle Princess Peach but as far as actually starting it goes I don't have a lot to show for it. The long and the short of it is that I ordered some more pink beads to fill in the missing portions (and have a few more on the way) and should have the beading for the bodice started this upcoming week.

This is also the first time I've created and posted from the iPad app, so we'll see if this comes out ridiculous looking or not.

Hopefully I'll have something to show for all this,

I've been absent the past few weeks for a handful of reasons, the top one being that I've had a bit of artist's block or, as I've been told, worn myself out from it. All my friends, my mother, and my brother said I needed a break. As my brother put it, "You've been working on art every day for years, let yourself have a vacation!" Well, so I have. Every time I so much as looked at my beads or patterns I was suddenly way more interested in cleaning or going back to bed. It was downright awful even thinking about sewing.

For the first time since this began, yesterday I looked at the beads I have gathered for Princess Peach and actually wanted to do something with them. I got online, hunted down through fierce determination the two shades of pink I was missing (one was marked as "salmon", feh!), and was even excited to start working on her pattern again! Like, I'm wondering how I'll be able to get all that gold detail in on her bodice without it becoming clumpy - that's going to be a lot of fun to figure out!

With that, I'll bring you up to speed.

I've been spending most of this downtime playing Hyrule Warriors, which is a spinoff game from some Japanese historical thing and one of my favorite series, Zelda. It's a ton of fun and has been a lifesaver for my time spent away from the workdesk. This past week we picked up The Evil Within which is a massive change of pace from Hyrule Warriors. In one you kill as many enemies as you can, sometimes thousands in a single play, and in the other you're lucky if you only have to deal with one at a time.

From all this, I have no desire to create anything from Evil Within. But, Zelda's warrior outfit has my artistic wheels turning. In part, I think I could figure out how to do her on my current 5-inch scale forms. But I'm not sure about those shorts of her's. I've never done beaded pants! In another part, I think it would look much nicer on a Barbie doll scale but I've never worked on that size before! Stop it, brain. She's not in any sort of plan but I like that I'm feeling inspired to work again.

Here's a summary of current / WIP projects that are in motion:
Princess Peach - should finally have all beads ordered
Ocean Ballgown - most of the beads gathered
Monochrome Eumelia - beads ready!
Mystery Dress - not off the table, but have yet to figure out of my trick will work
Peacock Xstitch - still hanging out on my desk
Fantasy Xstitch - for Stitchingpirates' contest, yet to figure out what I'm doing

And lastly, Mysterious Mysteries. There was meant to be a whole lot of them but with the art block I'm like a month behind on the schedule I wanted. So, they'll probably roll over into next year at some point instead. What I can tell you was that they are meant to be freetime projects as gifts for my friends, and they're mysterious because I can't post WIPs or photos or any sort of information about them because they'd all tell each other and then the secret would be done! So, we all just have to be patient on this.

My Princess Peach beads should be arriving this week and I'm hoping I'll feel awesome enough to get started since I have most of her bodice pattern drawn already.
Here's to hoping,

These past few weeks haven't been the highlight of the year when it comes to creating artwork. It's not that I don't have a ton of ideas or even a ton of projects to do, it's just that I really haven't been feeling it. I find myself making excuses for pretty much any sort of project right now; even rearranging all the furniture in my room sounds more fun than starting the next sewing project. And that's awful seeing as I love to do that.

Onto happier things though, right? Here's what's been going on this past week:

Last Sunday I was in California with my cousin Amelia. While I had the excuse to make everyone drive in for my grandma's 70th's birthday, my ulterior motive was to get a photoshoot done for my upcoming magazine interview with Katie Dean. It's the first time in my life I'd ever had my makeup done, it was Amelia's first time doing someone else's face makeup, and it was my first time getting professional photos done. Now, I'm sure Amelia doesn't call herself a professional, but just take a look at her work (I linked it in her name above) and tell me otherwise! She's fantastic. My cousin Lynee helped out with makeup too.

[on deviantART]

What I can tell you about makeup is that I wasn't enthused to go about learning how to do it myself. It took about half an hour to apply everything and it was so many steps... and even though I was warned it might feel a little cakey it totally didn't! It didn't feel like I was wearing anything at all. The mascara I could feel - it was sort of sticky on my eyelashes and made them, well, noticeable. Usually I'm not aware every time I blink! The lip makeup was also very strange feeling... sticky perhaps, but also very.. well, the same as the mascara really, it made me really aware of the shape of my lips and every time I moved.

The experience itself was amazing though, that all aside. I really wanted to look natural for the photos. I knew, since its something so important for me, that I wanted to look my best and that I'm rarely happy with how photos of me come out. I also didn't want to look like a Barbie doll in the end photos, right? I wanted to look like me! Amelia and Lynee did an absolutely beautiful job with my face, I couldn't have been happier. For the very first time I loved all the photos of me! Goodness, it's hard to pick favorites out from the whole thing!

As always, I never leave California without a new set of projects to do. My aunt gave me some antique fans and a purse to repair.

The purse is bead knitting or crochet, which I have no idea how to do. I might be able to cheat it though and stitch the pieces back together with the help of Mom. The strap will be an easy fix but the hole in the edge is probably caused by the metal clasp rubbing against the fibers. In any case once it's fixed it'll only be for decorative display as I'm not sure using it would be wise.

The two fans are smothered in perfume. I mean, I couldn't work on them because they were giving my mom and brother a headache when I brought them out. The first is an abalone shell structure with hand-painted fabric and lace. Most of the spokes are broken and its missing the closing half of its shell. The other is made up of carved bone (probably?) and is physically disintegrating as I handle it. I'm going to save the structure and give it new fabric.

This week is super short because most of it has been spent on my mysterious mystery project. I couldn't tell you all the work I've done even if I wanted to because of the secrets, so you'll just have to live with it until it can be revealed.

This week marks the finalization of the time consuming project I started in January! With 263 hours of stitching and 26.5 hours of beading, a total of 289.5 hours, it's finally all come together. I'm saying "mostly" at the top because I want to figure out a saying / phrase / quote to go along the bottom with my signature. It was quite the journey with many progress photos along the way, but all my patience has paid off!

I'm smiling back there, I swear!

With the last pieces coming into place I went back to station #1 (in front of the laptop in my room) to do some pattern designing and work on some biscornu prototypes. Not the best idea I ever had, to be honest. I gathered up all my patterns and then realized after two (or three?) weeks of doing nothing but cross-stitch that I wouldn't be able to calmly work on designing a biscornu's folding.

Before I left for station #2 (my work table in front of the TV), I started work on a custom collaboration pattern between me and GraniteFire. Originally we had planned on GF creating a lady wearing a dress made of wine, and I had all sorts of ideas to make the dress in silk and metallic threads and her hair lined with silvers and golds. We ran into a sort of road block though since liquid is very difficult to shade and I believe the project is mostly abandoned since April.

So in alternate, I grabbed up GF's most recent posting of improvement art and fed her through my program. It spit out over 200 colors required and I've been slowly reducing it; now I'm around 140. The most difficult bit of this has been maintaining the shading of all of GF's beautiful work. The program seems to think this requires about twenty shades of white to accomplish and reducing them has been a happy task.
The shop is really pretty and really pink - just my kind of place!

I'm revisiting the first five-inch-tall bead dress I ever did and she remains one of the most time consuming patterns I have. The bodice took six hours! I'm now at ten hours as I post this and I haven't yet reached the lacey sections of the skirt!

Until next week,

This past week has been very busy behind the scenes and the main focus on art has been beading Mirabilia's. I did a lot, I swear, from sunrise to sunset I've been on the move every day, but as I sit down to type this I'm finding it hard to pin it all down.

I'm over halfway done so far on the beading! I'm at 17 hours.
I did five hours of volunteer work at the local art club this week and received a giant two boxes of beads from Bev! I didn't open them to see until it was too dark for photos, but trust me she sent me enough for mannnnny dresses, it'll last for years. I'm so so happy about it!

I spent two hours working on Princess Peach's bodice pattern this morning too, and I wish I could show it off to you without revealing all my pattern work! I'm still missing bead colors for her so I won't be able to do much with it yet but I like getting ahead.

Until next Sunday my stitching friends,

Hello hello!

This week marks the finishing of my version of Mirabilia's Dressmaker's Daughter, part 1: the stitching. Part 2 started today and is for adding all the beading!

263 hours of extreme relaxation. See the full scan [here].

I learned a great deal from start to finish on this piece, and with true honesty most of it was learned starting with Autumn since I taught myself (with google to aid) about starting on linen, working with Canon Watercolors, working with Krenink braids, ironing while still attached to a loom, how to use my new loom, how 23 hours of stitching can use up 24 meters of thread, and so on. It's been absolutely wonderful! It's a personal project done on personal time and I'm happy about that too - my heart would break if I had to sell this piece, it's just too much love poured into one piece of fabric!

If you are starting a Mirabilia piece and would like some pointers, please check out Autumn's WIP post: [just click here]

Today I started the beads, which is daunting. I hope that I'll get faster as I go along but I'm using the technique from that page I posted last week to secure them. When I feel stronger about my skill on it I will be creating a quick tutorial for future stitchers.

Mirabilia's Dressmaker's Daughter is one of the few projects you can't really follow along with through my Facebook page as it's a personal project and won't go up for sale. That said, the other project I've been spending time on this week is the peacock I claimed from my cousin back in June. So far I'm 13.5 hours into working on it. 7.5 hours were spent just on the tail feathers! It's a nice break from working on the linen for Mirabilia's and I'm looking forward to the next part: tons and tons of half-stitching for the sky and leaves. The entire 7x5 inch box is going to be filled by the time I'm done!

That's it this week for the current projects, but it's not the end of planning done this week. I purchased more beads for Princess Peach, the 401 size 11 (rainbow white) beads I need for Peach and Monochrome Eumelia are ordered, secrets project beads, an ocean-color dress's beads, and I'm eyeing a finalization for a custom dress for myself. That's five more bead dresses in the line up! Oh, and let me say again here, the ladies over at Simply Beads USA are so kind! They fully refunded me for the white beads I couldn't use in the form of a coupon. When I used the coupon this weekend (Labor Day weekend) I couldn't combine it with the holiday sale coupon, but she refunded me the amount for the sale as well! It made me smile quite a lot when I got the email, another high point this week!

On top of that I'm playing around with the idea of Christmas presents this year. Christmas presents can't be too elaborate because I'm trying to save money on materials and time costs, but I'm really really hoping I'll be able to pull it off properly.

Here's the really big news, yes!, even bigger than finishing the stitchwork at 263 hours!! My friend-of-a-friend-and-now-my-friend Katie Dean got a job at Bead Magazine as an editor and has asked me of all people to do an interview and be featured!! She's the same who's been in my To-Do List on deviantART since last year to do a chocolate beaded cake! This won't be posted or done until Spring of next year but you can rest assured I won't let you forget to see it!! It's pretty much the most exciting thing ever and I won't attempt to hide my enthusiasm, it's so so so fantastic and I'm so honored to have been chosen!

Other happy news this week has included a Princess Peach figurine being announced (of quality I would actually be able to use her as a reference), Shulk was announced for Super Smash (a character from one of my favorite games), I've been invited to do some volunteer work at the local art club, my friend Bev Choy is sending
me a goodie bag which is incredibly kind of her!, and all sorts of other
random tidbits of happiness! This week has just been amazing and I hope this bright smiles carry me on through September!

Until next Sunday my crafty friends,
